Today we ran our second peer education sessions, this time in Batukunko nursing school teaching around 80 students about breast cancer awareness, sexual health and emergency 1st response. It was amazing to see so many students turning up despite being on school holiday and during Ramadan. As this was our second time doing these sessions our confidence grew and we were able to tailor them to our audience.

We stopped off at Bato-Kunku community health centre, owned and ran by the schools proprietor. It had a consultation room, labour ward and pharmacy. Looking around we were very humbled in one section of the labour ward as there was a single lamp as the sole light source – although it was nice to see there was a place for women to go to get the help they needed.

On the way back to the Gunjur Project we stopped off at a roadside fruit stall and bought some fresh pineapple and mangos which we enjoyed by the pool.

For the first time we ventured on foot outside the Gunjur Project on foot, exploring the local fishing village. We saw the women washing and descaling the fish ready for the smokehouse.

We also heard stories of runners carrying fish on their head from the beach to the community ice room for 50 dalasis (around 75p). We then continued to the beach where we saw all the colourful fishing boats out at sea before stopping at Nemasu eco lodge for a drink. We made our way back to the lodge through the local village where we met the locals and even a few goats and vultures!

For our dinner we had an authentic Gambian dish (Yassa). The tailor returned with our clothes – everyone looked amazing – then we prepped for the Gambia Girl Guide sessions tomorrow.
